Tenants Question Time gives a voice to hard-to-reach tenants

Around 200 tenants - the majority from hard-to-reach communities - fired questions at a top panel of housing decision-makers at TIC's hugely successful Tenants Question Time event.

On Wednesday 4th February 2004 TIC staged a major event in the style of BBC’s Question Time in the Courtyard Theatre of West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Martin Wainwright, Northern correspondent of the Guardian newspaper, was the question master for the event. The top panel including Executive Chair of Neighbourhoods and Housing, Cllr Richard Lewis, and the acting Director Neil Evans fielded more than 50 questions from the floor.

Council and housing association tenants from all over Leeds asked questions on the decent standard, on demolition plans, on the need for new housing for the elderly and disabled, on anti-social behaviour, neighbourhood wardens, lettings policy and parking on estates.

Most of the tenants who attended had not been to a tenants meeting before. They were delighted with the event and came away feeling they had made their views known and helped to influence housing decisions in the city.
